Personal Information

About myself:I was born in Shandong Province, China, a culture-rich region which gave birth to the great philosopher and educator Confucius. Confucius taught people to respect the unknown, and modesty became a natural merit for people of the region. His ways have been passed through generations for 2500 years, and provide me with ample motivation to further our understanding of Earth history through paleontological research.I grew up in a regular school environment in China before studying and working in different universities in China, the United Kingdom, and Germany for my Bachelors degree, my PhD and in various research positions. My education and research experience in China and Europe are valuable agents for me explore and evaluate both eastern and western ways of teaching and learning, while pursuing unknowns in the field of geosciences. I tackle some of the fundamental questions in Earth history, including what caused mass extinctions, how environmental changes impact the evolution of life.I was a timid boy with awkward English when I first arrived in England 12 years ago. I met great people and gradually became an established scientist and a confident educator. My personal experience constantly reminds me of how important a good teacher/supervisor can change a person's path in life. Following this philosophy, I poured my energies into helping students and colleagues to the best of my ability. After working nine years in Germany as a Wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter, I've decided to move the family back to Wuhan in Dec 2022 and establish my own lab and working group. I always embrace change and seek out new challenges for myself. I confront racism, sexism, academic bullying, social injustice, and discrimination of any kind. My personal integrity is my last stand.About my reseach:I am a sedimentary geochemist and also a specialist in Permian-Triassic conodont biostratigraphy and biochemistry, with a strong emphasis on oxygen isotope thermometers. My primary research interest includes past extinctions, extreme climates and ocean anoxic events using state of art tools. I work on the isotope compositions of molluscs, conodonts, foraminifers, and fish teeth as proxies for climate changes during past biodiversity crises. I have established a wide international research network across Europe, China, and Canada and hopefully more colleagues around the world. I dedicate myself to a broader spectrum of research. One of the key focuses of my research is the Palaeozoic-Mesozoic transition. It is one of the most enigmatic intervals in Earth history that saw the rise of modern ecosystem. This intriguing interval also witnessed a dramatic shift from an ice-house Earth to a hot house Earth. This was accompanied by dramatic earth system changes including high frequent oscillations in ocean chemistry, a shift of fauna and flora from Palaeozoic types to modern types and several major volcanic and extinction events in a ~60 Myr interval.Scholarly exchanges:I always believe that science is without border and collaboration makes better science. As part of my administrative duties in Wuhan, I am in charge of the scholarly exchange. It is my duty to invite and host international guests and sending outcoming postgradulate students. If you wish to visit us, feel free to contact me by email. I will make the stay of our guests as comfortable as possible. For perspective students:I treat everyone equally, regardless of age, gender, and race. If you want to join a dynamic and growing team, always feel free to contact me.List of publication:2023 62. Müller, J.*, Sun, Y.D.*, Yang, F., Regelous, M., Joachimski, M.M. 2023.
