Professor Xiao's research interests lie in 3D computer vision, laser scanning and remote sensing. The vision is to develop smart 3D sensing, mapping and reconstructoin () algorithms, applied to smart cities, digital twins, smart forestry and intelligent infrastructure, for the benefits of human and nature. Studies include 3D modelling, object detection and tracking, infrastructure and transport systems monitoring, forest monitoring and structrual analysis, dynamics/change detection, from multi-scale multi-modal sensing platforms, e.g. static and mobile mapping systems, airborne systems (including UAVs), satellite, etc. He is currently serving as a Fellow of the UK RSPSoc and editorial member of ISPRS Journal P&RS, the Photogrammetric Record, and Remote Sensing.
